Surge Protective Devices (SPDs)

Surge Protective Devices, commonly referred to as SPDs (TVSS) refer to a special type of protective device used for limiting the transient voltages. This is done by either diverting or limiting the surge current, whilst at the same time preventing continued current flow while still being able to repeat these functions as designated based on the type of SPD. The designated categories are provided from the National Electrical Code (NEC) and include four (4) main types as shown below:

  • Type 1: Permanently connected SPDs mainly intended for use in installations between the secondary of the service transformer and the line side of the service disconnect overcurrent device.
  • Type 2: Permanently connected SPDs intended for installation on the load side of the service disconnect overcurrent device, including SPDs located at the branch panel.
  • Type 3: Point of Utilization SPDs.
  • Type 4: Component SPDs, including discrete components, as well as assemblies.

TYE Manufacturing is pleased to offer SPDs catered to Type 2 category of which are commonly used in distribution switchboards. These distribution switchboards are also designed and manufactured in house by TYE Manufacturing. In particular, TYE offer our customers Raycap SPDs and is an authorized distributor for this brand. These units are UL 1449 listed as per the Standards for Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) and have a huge range of additional functionalities.

These SPDs can be selected for various applications such as Single phase and three phase (Wye and Delta connections) with availability across multiple voltage ranges. The SPDs are selected based on the system voltages, as well as the short circuit current ratings as required.

The Raycap devices are available in multiple models such as the RSE Series 1, RSE Series 2 and RSE Series 3 as shown below with varying functionalities.
